If you haven't ever tried one, then maybe now
is the time. As we are strongly advised to cut back on fat,
a satisfying occasional replacement for a rib steak is hard
to find. Surprisingly, the portobello mushroom is one food
that can be a wonderfully tasty and satisfying substitute.
Portobello (or portabella) mushrooms are simply a larger version of the crimini
mushroom. Portabello mushrooms are commonly found at 4-6" sizes. They
contain almost no fat (.02) per gram, 26 calories (per 100 grams) and 1.5 (g)
of fiber and 2.5 (g) of protein, .5 carbs. With these numbers they're worth
a try !
The mushrooms are popular as a meat replacement with vegetarians, but you don't
need to be a vegetarian to enjoy them. Portobellos, skillfully prepared in
a wide variety of recipes, can be incredibly sstisfying as a main meal. Restaurants
offer a variety of dishes for the diet conscious with portobellos as the main
ingredient, and you will find a great pizza recipe in the South Beach Diet
book.
It's certainly one delicioius way to enjoy fine
dining without breaking the calorie bank.
